Establishment and Mission
             
                           
                           
           

Jordan Nuclear Regulatory Commission was established in 2007 as a successor to the former Jordan Nuclear Energy Commission, established in 2001. JNRC is an effectively independent and adequately empowered Regulatory Body. It enjoys administrative and financial independence. The main goal of the JNRC is to work, in coordination with relevant bodies, on achieving the following:

  • Regulating and monitoring the use of nuclear energy and ionized radiation.

  • Protecting environment and human health and property from the hazards of radiation and related pollution.

  • Ensuring the availability of conditions and requirements of general safety, radiation protection, and nuclear safety and security.

             
                           
                           
           

Governing Legislation

             
                           
                           
            In correspondence with Article (3) of the Jordanian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Energy Law, number (29), year 2001, the Jordan Nuclear Energy Commission was established. Later in 2007, Radiation Protection, and Nuclear Safety and Security Law, No. (43) for the year 2007, was issued initiating Jordan Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
             
                           
                           
           

Decision Making

             
                           
                           
           

The Commission is administered and supervised by a Board of Directors, headed by a Chairman and has five members, as follows:

  • A representative for Jordan Atomic Energy Commission,

  • A representative for the Ministry of Health,

  • A representative for the Ministry of Environment,

  • Two Jordanians knowledgeable in the field of radiation and nuclear energy, appointed by the Ministers Council.

The Commission is run by a Director General, who is appointed by a recommendation of the Prime Minister, approved by the Ministers Council, and associated with a Royal decree.
             
                           
                           
           

JNRC Tasks and Responsibilities:

             
                           
                           
           

    1.   Provision of authorizations and licenses for institutions and workers in the nuclear and radiation field, ensuring compliance with the pertinent rules and regulations.

    2.   Controlling and monitoring the implementation of pertinent rules through inspection.

    3.   Communication with regional and international regulatory bodies in the field for exchange of expertise and scientific research.

    4.   Participating in relevant Arab, regional, and international projects.

    5.   Regulating relationships of national institutions in the field among each other, as well as with relevant Arab, regional and international institutions.

    6.   Application of comprehensive safeguards and creating a system for the documentation and control of nuclear materials subjected to the said safeguards.
