            Supportive Technical Services Directorate

(STSD)

The Supportive Technical Services Directorate is in charge of providing technical support to other Directorates in addition to executing a number of projects and programs. In order to achieve its goals, four departments were affiliated to it:

            I: Environmental Radiation Measurements Department:

The main tasks handled by the Department are:

  • Implementing the radiological map of Jordan.

  • Executing environmental programs to observe the artificial fallout.

  • Following up on and analysis of the data received by environmental monitoring stations.

  • Measuring the environmental samples received from the JNRC directorates or any national institute.

The Department comprises the following laboratories:

  • Gamma Spectroscopy Laboratory: contains different kinds of gamma systems that depend on high purity germanium detectors.(HPGe)

  •  Alpha Spectroscopy Laboratory: contains an alpha system with six chambers that depend on Passivated Implanted Planar Silicon detectors.(PIPS)

  • Beta Counting Laboratory: contains liquid scintillation analyzer.

  • Mobile Gamma Radiation Laboratory: contains Gamma system that depends on NaI detector.

II: Measurement Services Department

The responsibilities of this department cover the following:

  • Measurement and analysis of all types of imported/ exported goods.

  • Provision of technical support and assistance in case of emergency and whenever needed.

  • Removing radioactive contaminants.

  • Calibrating and operating the mobile laboratories and the laboratories working at the border gates.

This Department consists of:

  • Gamma Ray Spectroscopy Laboratory: contains the gamma ray spectroscopy that is based on high-purity germanium detectors.

  • A device to measure total Alpha and total Beta emitters.

  • Portable radiation survey equipment to measure Beta, Alpha and Gamma emitters.

III: Radiochemistry and Preparation Department:

The functions of this department include the following:

  • Carrying out physical preparatory steps regarding all types of samples to be measured using Gamma spectroscopy system or/and separated in radiochemistry lab.

  • Separation of Alpha emitters and processing the samples to be measured using Alpha spectroscopy system.

  • Separation of Beta emitters and processing the samples to be measured using Beta counting system.

The Department consists of the following laboratories:

  • Physical Preparation Laboratory.

  • Radiochemical Laboratory.

IV: Quality Assurance Department:

The Department is designed to be responsible for:

  • Applying a quality system to all working laboratories.

  • Seeking accreditation for the working laboratories.

  • Preparing the requested forms and documents for all departments in STSD.

  • Managing the receipt of samples and handing over of results.

  • Observing the performance of laboratories and applying quality control procedures.
